Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds: An Honest Comparison

This is the question I get asked most at the counter, and the honest answer isn't the one either side of the internet argument wants to hear. Lab grown and natural diamonds are both real diamonds. The difference between them is origin and price, not quality, and once you understand what each one actually offers, the choice usually makes itself.

They Are Chemically the Same Diamond

A lab grown diamond is not a simulant, and it is not the same thing as cubic zirconia or moissanite. It has the same crystal structure, the same hardness, and the same optical properties as a diamond pulled from the earth, because it is made of the same material: carbon, arranged the same way, under the same pressure and heat conditions a diamond forms under naturally. The only difference is where that pressure and heat came from. A natural diamond formed that way inside the earth over a billion years or more. A lab grown diamond formed that way inside a machine over a period of weeks. Both are graded on the same 4C scale, by the same major labs, using the same equipment.

Why Lab Grown Diamonds Cost Less

The price gap is not because lab grown stones are lesser. It's supply. A natural diamond has to be found, and the search itself, along with the mining, sorting, and cutting that follows, is expensive and slow. A lab grown diamond can be produced on a predictable schedule to a specific size and clarity target, which means supply can actually meet demand. That's the entire reason lab grown diamonds run roughly 60 to 85 percent less than a natural diamond of comparable size and quality. It's a market efficiency, not a quality discount.

What You Actually Gain by Choosing Lab Grown

The most direct advantage is size and clarity per dollar. At the same budget, a lab grown diamond will typically let you go up a size, or up a color and clarity grade, or both, compared to a natural stone. For a lot of our clients building a first fine jewelry piece for themselves, that means the difference between a 0.75 carat stone and a 1.5 carat stone at the exact same price point.

What You Actually Gain by Choosing Natural

Rarity and resale expectation are the honest reasons to choose natural. A mined diamond has existed for over a billion years before it reached you, and for some buyers that history carries real meaning, particularly for an engagement ring or a piece meant to be passed down. Natural diamonds also currently hold resale value more predictably in the secondary market, since the supply of lab grown stones has grown quickly and prices have continued to soften as production scales. If you view a diamond as a long term store of value rather than primarily a piece to wear and love, that's worth weighing.

Certification Matters More Than Origin

Whichever you choose, buy only a certified stone. Every diamond we sell, lab grown or natural, carries an independent report from IGI or GIA stating the shape, carat weight, color, clarity, and cut, along with a laser inscribed number you can verify on the issuing lab's own website. For more on how to read that report and what the two labs do differently, see our guide to IGI vs GIA certification.

A Simple Way to Decide

Ask yourself one question: are you buying for how the piece looks and wears, or for what it represents as a rare, geologically old object? If the answer is the first, lab grown gives you more diamond for the same money, and it will look, wear, and test identically to a natural stone. If the answer is the second, natural is the honest choice, and there's nothing wrong with paying for that meaning. Most of our clients land somewhere concrete: a lab grown center stone in an everyday piece, and a natural stone reserved for the one piece meant to carry history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond? Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties as a natural diamond. The only difference is that it formed in a controlled lab environment rather than underground.

Can a jeweler tell the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds by looking at them? No, not by eye. Distinguishing the two requires specialized lab equipment. This is exactly why certification matters: the report states the origin so there's no guesswork.

Do lab grown diamonds hold their value? Less predictably than natural diamonds at this point. Because lab grown supply has grown quickly, resale prices have continued to soften. If long term resale value is a priority, natural is the more established choice.

How much less do lab grown diamonds cost than natural diamonds? Typically 60 to 85 percent less than a natural diamond of comparable size, color, and clarity, though the exact gap depends on the specific stone.
