Buying a Pre-Owned Cartier Love Bracelet: Size, Screws and Condition

Before you buy a pre-owned Cartier Love bracelet, get three things right: the size, the screws, and the condition of the gold. The Love is a rigid oval bangle sized in centimeters, it cannot be resized the way a chain can, and it closes with screws that show wear before anything else does. Measure your wrist first, then judge the piece in front of you.

A Short History of the Love Bracelet

Aldo Cipullo designed the Love bracelet for Cartier in New York in 1969. The idea was a bracelet that locks onto the wrist with screws and a small screwdriver, so taking it off is a deliberate act. The screw-head motif across the surface is the design itself, which is why its condition matters so much on a pre-owned piece. Today the line includes the classic width, a thinner small model, and versions set with diamonds, in 18K yellow, rose and white gold.

How to Size a Love Bracelet

Love bracelets are sized by their inside circumference in centimeters, so a size 17 is about 17 centimeters around the inside. Measure your wrist with a soft tape or a strip of paper just above the wrist bone, where the bracelet will sit, and note the number in centimeters. Cartier's own sizing guide suggests adding about one centimeter to your wrist measurement for a looser fit.

In practice, most people choose a size between one and two centimeters above their wrist measurement. Closer to one centimeter gives the close, fitted look the bracelet was designed for and keeps it from sliding over the hand. Closer to two lets it move more, which some people find more comfortable for daily wear, especially in warm weather. If you plan to stack a watch on the same wrist, a slightly closer fit stops the two from knocking together.

Because the bracelet is a rigid oval, the size you buy is the size you keep. That is the single most important decision, more than metal or model. Every Love bracelet we list states its size in the title, for example this size 16 Love bracelet in 18K yellow gold or this size 18 in 18K white gold.

Classic or Small Model

The classic Love bracelet is the wider original. The small model is noticeably narrower and lighter, and it is the easier of the two to stack with other bracelets or wear next to a watch. Sizing works the same way for both. Small model bracelets are often set with a few diamonds between the screw motifs, like this small model with six diamonds in 18K rose gold. If the listing does not say which model it is, ask before you buy, because photographs alone can make the widths hard to judge.

What to Check on the Screws

The screws are the working part of the bracelet and the first place wear shows. On a pre-owned piece, look for:

  • Every screw present: the bracelet should close securely with all of its screws in place.
  • Clean slots: the screw heads should have crisp slots. Rounded or chewed slots mean the screws were forced, often with the wrong tool, and they may need replacement.
  • A firm closure: once closed, the two halves should sit flush with no gap or wobble at the hinge side.

Cartier has revised the screw system over the bracelet's life, so older and newer bracelets do not always close the same way. Ask which closure a bracelet has, and whether it comes with a screwdriver, which is a separate accessory and is sometimes missing from a pre-owned set.

What to Check on the Gold

Gold is soft, and a bangle worn every day collects scratches. Light surface scratches are normal and polish out. The issues that matter more are:

  • Dents or a distorted oval: a Love bracelet should hold a smooth, even oval. A flattened side usually means it was struck or crushed.
  • Over-polishing: every polish removes a little gold. A bracelet polished many times shows soft, rounded edges on the screw motifs instead of crisp ones. This is the most common sign of a hard life.
  • Diamond settings: on diamond-set models, check that every stone is present and its setting is tight.
  • White gold color: white gold can show a warmer tone as its finish wears, which is a routine refinishing job rather than a defect.

Interior Marks and Paperwork

Turn the bracelet over. The interior should carry the Cartier signature, the gold purity mark, the size, and a serial number, struck cleanly and evenly. Weak, uneven or misspelled marks are a reason to stop. A certificate is a welcome extra when it comes with the piece, and some of our listings include one, but its absence alone does not make a bracelet less authentic. Living With a Love Bracelet

Many owners wear the bracelet every day without taking it off. That is what it was made for, but it is worth removing before heavy lifting, before medical scans, and before any activity where the bracelet could be crushed. Clean it with warm water and a drop of mild soap, dry it fully, and check the screws now and then so a loose one is caught early.

Frequently asked

What size Cartier Love bracelet should I get?

Measure your wrist in centimeters just above the wrist bone. Cartier suggests adding about one centimeter for a looser fit, and most people choose a size one to two centimeters above their wrist measurement depending on how close a fit they want.

Can a Cartier Love bracelet be resized?

No. The Love bracelet is a rigid oval bangle, so it cannot be resized the way a chain bracelet can. Choose the size carefully before you buy.

What should I check on a pre-owned Love bracelet?

Check that every screw is present with crisp slots, that the bracelet closes flush, that the oval is even with no dents, that the screw motifs have not been softened by heavy polishing, and that the interior signature, purity mark, size and serial number are cleanly struck.
